NVIDIA’s latest compact generative AI supercomputer is also its cheapest

NVIDIA has just unveiled the Jetson Orin Nano Super Developer Kit, the successor to its Jetson Orin Nano kit from 2022. This new compact generative AI supercomputer can fit in the palm of your hand. The developer kit includes an 8GB Jetson Orin Nano system-on-module and a reference carrier board.

In terms of performance, the Jetson Orin Nano Super can reach up to 68 trillion operations per second (TOPS), a 70 percent increase over its predecessor. NVIDIA also claims a 1.7x improvement in generative AI inference performance and a 50 percent bandwidth increase to 102GB per second. As for the CPU frequency, it is now 1.7GHz, a slight jump from its predecessor’s 1.5GHz.

NVIDIA also claims that it “provides benefits” for all popular generative AI models. These include large language models (LLMs), vision language models, and vision transformers.

The Jetson Orin Nano Super’s software updates can also give its predecessor a boost, which is great news if you have the original Jetson Orin Nano. All you have to do is download the software and install the update. However, NVIDIA didn’t provide any specifics on how the older device’s performance will change.

The Jetson Orin Nano Super Developer Kit is currently available from NVIDIA-approved resellers. It’s currently just $249, down from its predecessor’s $499, making it the most affordable product of its kind right now.

It’s hard to find a company that has a better 2024 than NVIDIA. Even after some volatility in recent weeks, the chip giant’s stock price is up 178 percent last year, and its market cap of more than $3.3 trillion dollars — with a t — is currently second only to Apple. This is due to the fact that the ongoing AI revolution is primarily powered by NVIDIA processors, which is making billions on its hardware while its customers are completely at a loss.

So what does founder and CEO Jensen Huang do again? It’s a great question, but we won’t have to wait long for the answer. Huang is kicking off CES 2025 in Las Vegas with the first keynote address. He’ll take the stage at Mandalay Bay on Monday, January 8 at 9:30 p.m. ET — and you can watch his remarks live right here.

What to expect at NVIDIA’s CES 2025 press conference

In addition to plenty of AI-focused partnerships and services, NVIDIA laid out a list of PC gamer-friendly announcements at its CES 2024 press conference, including new RTX 40 Super GPU cards and upgrades to its GeForce Now game streaming platform.

As for 2025, look forward to the inevitable sequel, rumored to have a faster RTX 5090 for starters. Of course, Wall Street will be more focused on the details Huang will undoubtedly share on the state of NVIDIA’s AI hardware. We’re also likely to hear more news about the company’s Blackwell AI chips, which should start shipping in greater volumes this year after entering the market in late 2024.
